Your coffee table needs a tray
A tray is the single best tool for keeping a coffee table clutter-free in a small space.
Here’s why it works: a tray creates a defined boundary. Everything inside the tray is intentional. Everything outside is clutter. You don’t need to reorganize constantly—you just need a container that limits how much stuff can live there.
Get a large rectangular tray (wood or metal, whatever matches your vibe). On it, put coasters and a small dish or caddy for remotes. That’s it. Magazines should live in a basket under the table or on a shelf, not piled on top. Drinks go on coasters directly on the tray, so condensation doesn’t ruin the table.
The real trick: commit to clearing the table completely once a day. It takes thirty seconds. Throw trash, return remotes to the dish, toss magazines back to the basket. The tray keeps the chaos from spreading, but the nightly reset keeps the tray itself from becoming a landfill.
Your coffee table is for holding drinks and a couple remotes, not storing your whole living room. A tray respects that.
