Your hungry teenager needs a 3-liter lunch box

For a high-schooler who actually eats, you want a lunch box in the 2.5 to 3.5 liter range — about double what a normal adult would pack.

Teenage appetites are no joke. If your kid is at all athletic, or just going through a growth spurt, a standard 1.5L box that works fine for an office worker is basically a snack. The extra volume isn’t just for more food — it’s for the bulky stuff. Two sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, a granola bar, maybe a thermos. That adds up fast.

Don’t overthink the multi-compartment bento boxes either. All those dividers look nice but eat up real capacity. A plain big box plus one or two separate smaller containers gives you way more packing flexibility.

One caveat: don’t go past 3.5L unless they’re carrying a dedicated lunch bag. Anything bigger won’t fit in a normal backpack without becoming the whole backpack.

A hungry teen with a small lunch box is just going to buy two slices of pizza at school anyway — skip that.
