Your ice pack slot works for heat, too

The move is to microwave a sock full of rice for about a minute and drop it in the ice pack slot. Same slot, opposite job — it’ll radiate heat for a couple hours, which is exactly how long it needs to last.

The other half of the trick is pre-heating the food container. Fill the bowl or jar with hot water for a minute or two, dump it, then fill it with food. Wrap the whole thing in a clean dish towel before you zip the bag, and you’ve basically built a thermos out of accessories.

Stick to foods that don’t need to be screaming hot: pasta, fried rice, soup in a sealed jar, quesadillas, anything you’d happily eat lukewarm. Don’t fight the physics on pizza — just wrap it in foil and enjoy it at room temperature.

And yeah, skip the ice pack entirely. If the bag has two slots, use one for the rice sock and leave the cold side empty. Working against yourself isn’t a packing strategy.

The rice sock is the cheapest hack in the lunch game — and it beats half the thermoses sold.
