Your kid doesn't need a heavy lunch box.

If space in the backpack is the problem, skip the clunky insulated tote and use a thin flat container or a simple cloth bag.

Most kids’ lunches are a sandwich, a fruit, and a snack. That doesn’t need a rigid lunch box. A reusable cloth or nylon lunch bag folds flat, weighs almost nothing, and drops into any backpack. Toss in a small ice pack next to the sandwich and you’re done.

If you want the food separated, get a slim bento-style tray like Easy Lunchboxes. Those are shallow, flat, and stack easily. Something like Bentgo Kids is fine at a lunch table, but it’s bulkier than it looks in a packed backpack.

Stay away from insulated hard boxes, heavy metal tins, and anything with a built-in ice pack. They win on looks, lose on backpack space.

A lunch that fits in the backpack is one they’ll actually bring home.
