Your lunch bag needs to survive potholes

Skip the hard bento box — a squishable insulated bag with leak-proof containers is the right move if you bike to work.

Hard lunchboxes take up rigid space in a pannier and clatter around every time you hit a bump. Worse, they pop open on impact, and now you’re picking rice out of your work bag. A soft bag squishes into the leftover space in your backpack and absorbs the road noise instead of amplifying it.

The container matters more than the bag. Grab some LocknLock or Pyrex Snapware — they’re cheap, actually leak-proof, and survive being tossed around daily. Avoid the cheap knockoff Tupperware; you will find out the hard way that “seal” is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Brand-wise, Carhartt’s insulated lunch bag is a tank and costs about twenty bucks. PackIt’s freezable bags are great if you hate dealing with ice packs. Monbento boxes look nice on Instagram, but they’re not better for this — just prettier.
