Your lunch box is a tool. Buy it like one.

The best lunch setup for a construction worker is a hard rotomolded cooler, a couple of stainless steel containers, and one wide-mouth thermos. Skip the soft insulated bags with zippers — they die in two weeks on a job site.

The cooler is the backbone. You don’t need a Yeti; the Ozark Trail or RTIC versions cost half as much and work the same. Hard plastic means you can set a tool bag on it, wipe it out with a rag, and hose it off. No fabric, no zippers, no lining to tear. It holds ice from 5 a.m. to noon, which is all you need.

For the food itself, go with stainless steel containers with silicone lids or screw-on tops. They survive being dropped off a tailgate, don’t absorb grease smells, and go straight in the dishwasher. Avoid the plastic bento boxes with dividers — they crack, the lids warp, and food gets stuck in every seam.

Thermos for anything hot. Pre-heat it with boiling water for five minutes before you fill it, and it’ll keep soup or chili hot until lunch. And get a steel insulated water bottle, not the plastic ones — they sweat, they dent, and they hold heat in the sun.

Pack it like it’s going to fall off a truck. Because it will.
