Your lunch box will survive—if you keep it on the top rack
Most hard-shell lunch boxes can go in the dishwasher, but you should put them on the top rack and skip the heated dry cycle.
The usual plastic is polypropylene, which handles dishwasher detergent and water fine. The problem is heat. A hot drying cycle can warp the lid, melt the hinge, or make the plastic go cloudy. Top rack, low heat, and you’re good.
Stainless steel boxes are fine on the top rack too, but watch for interior linings or rubber seals. Insulated ones are a no-go—the dishwasher can damage the vacuum seal or the insulation itself. And if the box has a latch or a fabric strap, hand-wash that part.
Flip it over and look for the dishwasher-safe symbol. If you see it, you’re fine with the top-rack rule. If you don’t see it, assume it isn’t.
If you’re not sure, hand-washing takes two minutes—cheaper than replacing the box.
