Your lunch box won't fit. This will.

There is no traditional lunch box that fits into a standard car cup holder, but you can buy a tall food jar or thermos that does the job perfectly.

Standard cup holders are about three inches across. A normal lunch box is eight or nine inches wide and rectangular. That’s not going to happen. But there are vertical, cylindrical containers—usually insulated food jars, like a wide-mouth Thermos or Stanley—that are made to sit in a cup holder. They’ll hold soup, stew, pasta, or a salad if you’re careful, and they keep things hot or cold.

If you want something closer to a real lunch box, you’re out of luck. You could carry a smaller round container with a tight lid that happens to fit, but those are basically just oversized cups. The honest answer is that the cup holder was designed for drinks, not meals.

Future You will be happier with a good thermos than a smashed sandwich.
