Your pool pump capacitor is toast.

That humming noise means the motor is getting power but can’t spin up — it’s almost always a bad start capacitor.

The capacitor gives the motor an initial jolt of electricity to get it turning. When it fails, the motor just sits there humming, drawing high current and heating up. If you leave it like that for more than a few seconds, you risk burning out the motor entirely.

Fixing it is stupid easy. Flip the breaker, pop open the back panel of the pump (or the capacitor housing on the motor), and look for a cylindrical metal or plastic cap. They cost about $10–$20 at any hardware store or Amazon. Take a picture of the label (microfarad rating and voltage). Swap it, button it up, and you’re back in business.

One thing: discharge the capacitor first with an insulated screwdriver across the terminals. They can hold a zap even with power off.

Don’t call a pool guy yet — this is a $15 part and ten minutes of your time.
