Your regular lunch box is already perfect for zero-waste

A regular lunch box is all you need for a no-waste lunch—just swap the disposables for reusable wraps, silicone bags, and a cloth napkin.

Think of it as a simple division of labor. The beeswax or fabric wrap handles the dry stuff: sandwiches, wraps, crackers, a hunk of cheese. Silicone bags take the wet or messy stuff: cut fruit, veggies, yogurt, hummus, leftover pasta. The cloth napkin does double duty as both a napkin and a mini placemat, and honestly it’s the easiest swap you can make.

For packing, don’t overthink it. Put the heaviest item (silicone bag full of apples) at the bottom, then the wrapped sandwich on top so it doesn’t get squished. Crumple the napkin into any empty corner—it fills gaps and stops things from sliding around, which is exactly what a plastic baggie would have done anyway. If you’re using a bento-style box that’s already divided, even easier.

One thing I’ve learned: don’t force the wrap to do everything. It doesn’t seal, so anything juicy goes in the silicone bag. And for the love of all that is good, fold the wrap properly around the sandwich the first time, or you’ll be holding it shut while you walk to the bus.

You don’t need a fancy zero-waste kit. You need five minutes of habit, and your lunchbox already knows what to do.
