Your skin barrier is likely wrecked from the cold.
The signs are pretty obvious once you know what to look for. If your face feels tight and shiny (not in a good way) after washing, or products that normally feel fine suddenly sting, that’s your barrier waving a white flag. Flaking, redness, and that weird “windburn” look are also dead giveaways. Cold air strips moisture, and indoor heating finishes the job.
Repairing it is simple but boring: stop everything except the basics. Ditch cleansers with sulfates or acids for a week. Use a gentle cream cleanser (CeraVe Hydrating or La Roche-Posay Toleriane are safe bets). Apply moisturizer while your face is still damp to lock in water. Look for ceramides, squalane, or niacinamide in the ingredient list. If it’s really bad, slap on a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor at night over your moisturizer. Yes, it’s greasy, but it works.
Avoid exfoliants, retinols, and vitamin C until your skin stops complaining. That usually takes 5–7 days. Don’t pile on ten products to “fix” it—that makes it worse.
Your winter self will thank you for not treating this like a challenge.
