Picaridin beats DEET for daily use

Picaridin is the best all-around mosquito repellent for most people.

DEET is the old standard. It works, it’s cheap, and it’s been tested for decades. But it smells like a chemistry set, it melts synthetic fabrics, and it feels greasy on skin. You don’t want to wear it every day unless you’re in a malaria zone.

Picaridin is basically modern DEET without the downsides. It’s nearly as effective at repelling mosquitoes and ticks, but it doesn’t stink, doesn’t damage gear, and feels like a normal lotion. Studies show it lasts just as long as 20–30% DEET. For hiking, camping, or treating your backyard, this is the one to grab.

IR3535 is weaker. It’s found in many “natural” brands and it’s fine for low-risk situations (like a park picnic), but it needs more frequent reapplication and doesn’t hold up against aggressive biters or disease-carrying species. It also smells slightly floral, which some people hate.

If you’re traveling to a place with dengue or yellow fever, stick with DEET at higher concentrations (30–50%). For everything else: picaridin. Your clothes and your nose will thank you.
