Don’t use a box fan with flammable chemicals.

A standard box fan is not safe for ventilating a garage when you’re working with flammable chemicals. The motor and switch can spark, and even static buildup from the plastic blades can ignite vapors from solvents, paints, thinners, or gas.

I get why you want one — they move air cheap. But that cheap motor is basically a little fire starter waiting for the right fuel-to-air ratio. And in a garage, that ratio shows up fast.

If you’re just using water-based cleaners or non-flammable stuff? Fine. But for anything with a warning label that says “flammable” or “combustible” — keep the box fan unplugged.

Better options: open a garage door and use natural cross-ventilation, or buy a fan rated for hazardous locations (explosion-proof). Those are expensive, but so is a garage fire.

This is not where you save $20.
