Stick with UL or ETL certified box fans.

For box fans, the safety certification to look for is UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Intertek). They’re basically the same thing — both are Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories in the US. If a fan has either mark, it’s been independently tested for fire and electrical shock risks.

You’ll also see CSA in Canada and CE in Europe. But for the US market, UL or ETL is the standard. Don’t bother with brands that just claim “meets safety standards” without listing a lab. Means nothing.

The cheap no-name fan from a discount store might save you ten bucks, but skipping certification isn’t worth the potential smoke alarm at 3 AM.
