Get a sandproof blanket with a carry strap
The most durable and easy-to-carry picnic blanket for the beach is one with a sandproof bottom layer and a built-in carry strap or bag. You don’t want a blanket that turns into a sand trap – that’s miserable.
The real enemy at the beach is sand sticking to everything. A regular cotton or fleece blanket will hold sand like Velcro. The fix is a blanket with a woven nylon or polyester top that sand can’t cling to, plus a waterproof backing (usually PE or TPU) so moisture from the sand stays out. They’re also much stronger than a flimsy throw.
For carrying, look for one that either rolls up into its own attached strap or packs into a small carry bag. The ones with a fold-and-clip system are faster than a stuff sack. Weight-wise, you want under 2 lbs – anything heavier and you’ll leave it at home.
Some decent specific options: Rumpl makes some that are pricey but work great for sand and pack small. The Sand Cloud blankets are popular for a reason – they’ve got corner pockets to weigh it down with rocks or bottles, plus a convenient carry bag. Or just get a “sandproof beach blanket” from a generic outdoor brand – they’re all pretty similar.
Don’t overthink it – just get one that shakes sand off with a single flick and has a decent strap. Future you at the beach will thank yourself.
