You want firm but not rock hard

Checking pool float inflation without a gauge is simple: press your thumb into the top — it should give slightly but spring back.

If the material dimples and doesn’t bounce back, it’s underinflated. If it feels like a basketball, you’re pushing too much air. The sweet spot is like a well-baked bread loaf — firm on the outside but with a little give.

A second trick: float it on the water. A properly inflated float should sit high, with most of its body above the surface. If it’s listing or riding low like a half-submerged turtle, add air. If it wobbles like a balloon with too much pressure, let some out.

Your hands know more than you think. Use them.
